Sony Announces PlayStation Handheld to Put Razer Edge to Shame

At the PlayStation Showcase, Sony announced a new game streaming device along with true wireless earbuds for gaming.

For all the folks hoping for a Sony competitor to the Nintendo Switch, this doesn't look to be what you're looking for. Sony stated it was for streaming games from your PS5 to a handheld screen, rather than playing anything natively. Think more Razer Edge and less Steam Deck.

This is the "Project Q" that's been rumored for a while. It features an 8-inch screen and a controller attachment on either side, making it look like a DualSense controller with a screen instead of a touchpad. This way, you'll finally be able to play The Last of Us on the toilet — it's not going to happen reliably through the Steam Deck for a while.

We don't know what the software on Project Q will look like, but it'd be nice if there was something you could do on the thing without actively connecting to your PS5. For bonus points, it would be nice if it could stream games via PS Now.

To capitalize on the more portable nature of Project Q, Sony also announced some gaming earbuds. We don't know much about the earbuds other than it will work with the PS5 and PC and it will most likely work on Project Q when both products officially release.

Gaming earbuds in general are on the rise, Razer, for instance, has its Hammerhead earbuds that can connect to either your gaming PC or your phone. If the PlayStation earbuds have similar functionality, you could even take them with you on your morning commute.

We don't know when we'll be able to get our hands on this new way to play PS5 games, but keep tuned to IGN for more. For more information on what appeared at today's PlayStation State of Play showcase, check out our everything announced roundup.
